A new challenge has emerged in light of the controversy surrounding SBS and the Hollywood film, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Just a couple days ago, SBS was heavily criticized after it was revealed that they edited out several gay kiss scenes from the movie. The broadcasting network was met with severe backlash, to which they released an official statement saying, “It was edited after serious and careful consideration that it was a Lunar New Year special film broadcast by a public broadcast station to viewers 15+ in the evening. There were no special intentions.”
In light of the controversy, a gay couple has stepped forward with a “kiss challenge” to embrace all types of kisses in the world. With the hashtags, #every_kiss_is_equal and #all_kisses_are_equal, the couple explains the rules of the challenge for all their subscribers and why they decided to create it. They start the video with a quick introduction of themselves.
The couple goes on to explain why they created the challenge.
A few days ago, the movie ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ was screened on SBS, but they removed the same sex kisses in that movie.
They continue by sharing their opinion on the SBS situation. They share the noticeable difference between how the different kiss scenes were handled in the film. Firstly, they talk about the kiss scenes between a man and a woman…
The thing is, it wasn’t deleted just because it was a ‘kiss.’ Freddie Mercury kissed both a woman and a man. The scene where he kissed the woman was exactly the same…
…then they talk about how the kiss scenes between a man and a man were handled by the broadcasting network.
The discrimination against the gay kiss scenes was precisely the reason why the 8 year gay couple decided to start this challenge.
Which is why we suggest the ‘Bohemian Kiss Challenge’ to you. Kisses aren’t meant just for a man and a woman. We want to remind everyone that ‘kisses between loved ones are all equal, no matter what sex they are.’ That is why we have come before you with this challenge.
They explain the very simple rules of the challenge.
They then share the hashtags that participants can use to spread the challenge even further.
After their explanation, the couple concludes the video with their very own submission for the challenge by sharing a kiss.
South Korea has unfortunately been consistent with their conservative views on different topics. This includes homosexuality and all things related to the LGBTQ+ community. The SBS controversy may have been a small, but mighty wakeup call to the nation and it seems that the MANGO Couple is doing what they can to destigmatize the LGBTQ+ community.
